Chocolate Covered Strawberries

It’s the monday after valentines day, and that only means one thing. Strawberry sale!! Grocery stores tend to buy more strawberries around Valentines day, but for the ones they don’t sell, they gotta get rid of them asap which means SALE!! I was able to buy four pounds of strawberries for about $7; not too shabby I must say!

As I unpacked the strawberries, they looked a little too perfect which means that they have hella pesticide on them. Normally, they would have some bruises or be a little blemished, but these ones were perfectly shaped with the perfect amount of red. It was quite alarming. When preparing strawberries, I always do as my mom and grandma always tell me to do. That is to soak the berries in water for at least 10 minutes before eating or using so that the pesticide can come off. After the first five minutes of soaking the berries, the water turned slightly yellow. It might have been from the berries or the chemicals used, but I changed the water and continued to soak them until they seemed clean enough.

After a good soaking, I drained out the water and hand dried each one before laying them out on paper towels to air dry some more. I think I spend the most time drying the berries because if they are not properly dried, moisture can get into the chocolate causing it to seize and get grainy and clumpy.

In an ideal situation, I would use a double broiler to melt the chocolate and butter but since I’m too lazy to go downstairs to the kitchen, the microwave will have to do for now. I melted a mixture of semi-sweet and dark chocolate, since I love the bitterness of dark chocolate but still wanted it to be more sweet. Turns out I had melted just the right enough of chocolate for the amount of strawberries I was dipping. This never happens, typically there is either too little or too much chocolate left in the bowl. I must admit, I was pretty proud.

Of course I couldn’t help but eat one or a couple as I was dipping. The smell of chocolate and strawberry filled our lobby as they were being frosted. It’s “healthy” anyways, since it has strawberry (fruit) and dark chocolate (increases dopamine levels in brain causing you to be happy). So why not, go ahead. Eat one, maybe two or even five. It’s good for you anyways!

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

30-35 strawberries

7 oz semi-sweet chocolate

1 bar (1.25 oz) Hershey’s Special Dark Chocolate bar

4 Tbsp butter

Soak the strawberries in a large bowl for 10 minutes. Rinse and hand dry. Lay it out on paper towels and let it air dry. When it’s completely dry, start making the chocolate.

Over a double broiler, melt the chocolate and butter until it is a smooth and glossy consistency. If you do not have a double broiler, you can microwave it in 20 second increments, stirring between each one until the chocolate has reach the consistency needed. Take the strawberries and dip them one by one, and lay them onto cupcake liners to dry.
